Faces took on White Ensign in their first fixture since the management shake up. 7 players from the reserves stepped up to replace 7 outgoing first team players. I (Scott Bird) also took over for my first game in charge of the first team.
The game itself was in doubt as atrocious conditions continued right up to the first whistle. The atmosphere before the game was really good and the boys were pumped and ready to go. Faces made a bright start and were forcing the pace early on. With the wind at their backs the boys were snapping into every tackle, dominating possession and were camped in the visitors half.
Playing any sort of passing football was extremely difficult in the conditions but Faces were trying hard to get the ball down and play. The work rate was really good and the away side were being hurried into giving the ball away. Chances were few and far between with Darren Chetcuti going closet with a long range effort.
Faces best chance of the first half came just before the break when Jon Wightman cut through the defence and was about to square the ball for a tap in for Roy Darbo when the referee stopped the game as a 'scuffle' had broken out down the other end. Poor decision from the ref. Half time score 0-0.
The message at half time was the work rate needed to be maintained as we would be against the wind in the second half but the overall message from the first half was a positive reaction from all the players.
The second half began with the away side dominating the first 10 minutes as Faces struggle to adjust to the wind. White Ensign were now dominating the territory as they had the wind but like Faces in the first half, were struggling to create any worthwhile chances.
Faces suffered 2 injuries with Billy Swick and Joe Gadson forced off to be replaced by Wayne Wilkinson and Liam Dooley. A draw was looking on the cards but with 20 minutes to go White Ensign broke down the left and crossed for Simon Jones to volley home to put the visitors ahead.
Abs Mahmood replaced Roy Darbo as Faces pushed for an equaliser and gave everything they had but could just not find a breakthrough, with Danny O'Driscoll agonisingly close to getting on the end of an Abs Mahmood cross. Final score 0-1.
Star Man: Gary Bird - Just shadded it, read game well and good distribution - impressive return to first team action.
Managers Verdict: Unlucky not to get a point, good effort in poor conditions. Good start lads.
