Faces travelled to Bas Vegas knowing that a win would put them in control of their own destiny and promotion.
Faces started brightly with Basildon unable to cope with the tempo. All the hard work paid off when Greg Blake rolled the ball into Craig Critchell who rolled the defender and had a pop from 20 yards which somehow went in....1-0 to Faces.
Faces continued dominating and nearly scored again when Craig Critchell was put through by Paul Kelly and his shot beat the keeper but cannoned back off the bar . Jon Wightman then broke clear only for the keeper to deny him with a top save. The missed chances seemed to inspire Basildon who started to come back into the game, most notably the little Number 9 was causing all sorts of problems for the defence and it wasn't long before Jeff Wilks lost possession in midfield and Basildon broke clear to level the scores.
The half time team talk from the gaffer was meant to get everyone's spirits back up but it wasn't long before another defensive lapse allowed Basildon in to make it 2-1 to the home team. Faces now needed to up their game if they wanted anything out of the game.
The introduction of James Imber and a change of formation gave Faces more attacking options and it wasn't long before a foul on James Imber gave Faces a free kick from just outside the area. Jeff Wilks won the argument as to who should take the kick and he duly showed why.... clipping the ball into the top corner to level the scores and Faces could see their promotion chances getting back on track.
Faces continued their dominance and again were rewarded when a cross from the right struck a Basildon defender on the arm and Faces were rewarded a penalty. Jeff Wilks, who was proving to be a dead ball specialist, stepped up with the pressure on his shoulders and calmly slotted the ball home to give Faces a 3-2 lead....surely nothing could stop them winning the game now.......How wrong they were....
The referee, who was giving out more cards than Father Christmas, awarded a free kick to Basildon just outside the area for a push from Mark which nobody in Basildon saw......the chavved up number 6 from Basildon stepped up and blasted the ball in the top left hand corner which not even Danny Reds handball could stop to level the scores at 3-3.
The aftermath of this awful refereeing decision saw Scott Bird sent from the park and also saw a huge dent in Faces promotion chances......there was still to be one more chance when a scramble in the Basildon penalty area finished with Gareth Collins missing what can only be said to be a sitter!
The score finished 3-3 and only a win against newly crowned champions Kelvedon at home this Saturday will give Faces any chance of promotion.
Star Man - Lee Brant - 2 goals for Runwell keeps promotion dream alive!!
