Faces made the short journey to Canning Town hoping to carry on from last weeks improved performance. Damien Yoxall and Luke Roust came in for Shaun Crocker and Jamie Orr. The game began in blustery conditions with Faces playing against the wind.
The home side, were playing a lot of longs balls and Faces were struggling to get a foothold in the game. The lively forwards were causing problems in behind the back 3. On the 20 minute mark the forward chased a long ball which was not dealt with and he rounded Goalkeeper Luke Roust, who had no option but to bring him down. The penalty was calmly despatched into the top corner by Michael Smith as the host took the lead.
Faces responded and began to improve as they began to come to terms with the conditions. On 35 minutes Roy Darbo levelled the scores with a fine finish. Half time score 1-1. The message at half time was that although we were in the game, I though we hadn't really played well enough and if we pushed on and worked harder 3 points were there for us.
With their ears still stinging from my half time rant, Faces began the second half in much better fashion. Dominating all over the pitch, the home side struggled to cope with Faces attacking football. Jon Wightman almost put the away side in front when put through but his low drive was superbly kept out by the keeper. Not to be denied Jamie Moughton produced a delightful ball from the resulting corner which Jon Wightman headed home with a bullet header which went in off the far post to give Faces a deserved lead.
Faces were now well on top playing some lovely stuff, with Damien Yoxall in particular pulling the strings in midfield. Roy Darbo broke clear and finished superbly over the on rushing keeper to extend the lead to 1-3. The game should have been over as Faces were now in cruise control but football is never that simple! Canning Town put together a nice move with some slick passing which allowed Paul Henry to break clear and slide the ball home against the run of play to make the score 2-3.
Inspired by the goal the home side began to build some pressure and soon after Faces again failed to deal with a long ball and Paul Henry converted again to level the scores 3-3. Faces were shell shocked as a game they were dominating they were suddenly level. Wayne Wilkinson & Liam Dooley replaced Gary Bird & Joe Gadson in an effort to shake the team up.
Faces pushed for a winner and with 10 minutes to go a Danny O'Driscoll effort was tipped over the bar by the back peddling goalkeeper, a truly outstanding save. With injury time approaching Wayne Wilkinson broke down the right and crossed to the edge of the box where Liam Dooley connected with a diving header which flew in to the top corner, Roy of the Rovers stuff from Faces 3-4. Faces held on for the win despite another late scare to secure their first league win since the sunnier days of September!
Star Man: Damien Yoxall - Outstanding performance in the free role, worked his socks off and great attitude.
Managers Verdict: Great performance, especially in response to being pegged back to 3-3, need to defend better.
